Ethel Menta (Coffman) McGill
Born July 13, 1893 in Stringtown, Hays County Texas to Joseph Warren Coffman and Sidney Etrulia (Sharp) Coffman. Stringtown is located northwest of Ft. Worth, Texas. And is 179 miles west of the old Coffman Homestead 2 1/2 miles west of Bagwell, Red River County, Texas where her father, Joseph Warren Coffman was born and raised.
The Coffman Family Tree 1777 - 1940, Sarah Adelaide (Coffman) Phillips, printed in February 1941, has been a valuable resource of the Coffman family. A copy of which is included in this website. Although there is little information about Ethel's life specifically, we can glean insights of what her life was like through the information, memories and life stories of others like her half sister Lorell Coffman states, "Sidney Sharp Coffman died Jan. 19, 1900. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Baptist Church. On March 31, 1901, Joseph Waren Coffman married Mary Creola Thomas of Bagwell, Texas. Their children: Travis, Regina Ann, Lorell Euphemia, Seabern Wallace, Pauline, Joseph Warren Jr. "J.W." Coffman. Mildred Curtis (McGill) Hathaway, Ethel and Joseph McGill's eldest daughter tells that 'Ethel's mother, Sidney died when Ethel was 8 years old and was raised by her father and step mother Mary Creola (Thompson) Coffman. Mary and Ethel, as mother and daughter got a kick out of telling people there was only eight years difference in their ages.' The 1910 U.S. Federal Census shows the family living in the community of Akers, (Ardmore), Carter County, Oklahoma. The census taker list the household member as, Joseph Coffman age 39, Mary C. Coffman age 26, Ethel M. Coffman age 16, Mildred E. Coffman She married Joseph Franklin McGill (Born December 1, 1881 Mouldoon, Fayette county Texas. son of George C. McGill and Mahala (Rankin) McGill) on December 8, 1912 at Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma. They had eight childern; Mildred Curtis, Dallas Warren, Troy Madgeoline, Zula Qweta, Ellis Lloyd, Frankie Jo, Mary Minta, and Sterling Alvis McGill.
